The Netherlands: Cheaper travelling

One of the biggest dilemmas for students is their desire to travel and the costs that it includes. To travel in the Netherlands isn’t the cheapest. That is why it can put off many people. However, there are possibilities for cheaper travelling.

Do you travel by train?

Trains are probably the most used way of transport in the Netherlands. They’re pretty comfortable and fast (if you don’t count occasional disturbances). Though, the average price for the ticket is from 25 to 30 €. Of course, the price depends on the time of the day you choose to travel, whether it’s at 5 am or 1 pm. What are the options?

- Group tickets: if you travel in a group of 4 to 7 people, the price of the ticket goes from 4,93 € to 8 €

- Websites: I personally use mainly Actie van de dag, where you can buy two tickets for the price of 1

- Stores: sometimes HEMA or Kruidvat either offer a cheaper ticket or a special sale code

- OV-chipkaart: it’s a card you can use for both trains and buses; also it provides you with a up to 40 % (there are much more possibilities with this card, however, I would need a whole new article on that)

Do you travel by bus?

If you don’t mind travelling by bus, where there isn’t that much space for your legs (unless you’re 150 cm tall), you can use this option. One of the most used companies is Flixbus. Prices are always changing, but usually, it is very cheap. You can download the app and just keep refreshing it until the best moment comes. As almost everywhere, there are some sale codes, however, I’m not aware of any website that would offer them. Though, many travel bloggers and influencers offer these from time to time.

Looking for other options?

There are many, many other ways how to make travelling cheaper. For example, you can use BlaBlaCar. But if you’re lazy to plan the whole journey and to combine all the options, Rome2Rio could be an option. It is a website, where you can easily put your destination and it will show you all possible, money-saving, options and their combinations.

Ok, so now only choose time, place to go and one of the options. 😉 If you know about any other possibilities, please share it in the comment below. ☺️

(This article was not written in cooperation with any of the mentioned companies and it’s only of an informative character.)
